Entergy Louisiana storm update – 5/17/24, 7 a.m.

Entergy crews and contractors are assessing damages to the electric system and restoring power where it is safe to do so after a second wave of storms this week impacted South Louisiana overnight.
As of 7 a.m., approximately 78,900 customers were without power, with the hardest hit areas appearing to be Acadiana and the parishes of Tangipahoa and Jefferson, as well as the River Parishes between Baton Rouge and New Orleans.
A storm team of more than a thousand, many of whom have assisted with restoration efforts following the first wave of severe weather that crossed the state late Monday, is engaged in current assessments and restoration efforts following the second wave.
While weather forecasts called for the potential of excessive rainfall, there are reports that winds reached upward of 80 mph. Combined with lightning, winds of this level can down trees and limbs and impact power lines and other electric equipment.
Estimated times of restoration will be developed as additional intel comes in from the field.

Safety is our number one priority. If you lose power, keep the following tips in mind:
- Stay away from downed power lines and assume they are energized.
- Report a power outage on the myEntergy site or call 1-800-9OUTAGE. There is no need to speak with a customer service representative to report an outage if completed online.
- If you have a portable generator, use it safely. DO NOT run it in an enclosed space. If connecting the generator to the whole house, do so only if the connection has been installed by a licensed electrician to prevent back feed on to the distribution system.
- Minimize opening your refrigerator or freezer door. Food will stay cold much longer this way. If outside temperature is below freezing, consider placing food in an ice chest outside.
- Please stay clear of linemen as they work to safely restore power.
- Don't walk or drive through flood waters. Just six inches of moving water can knock you down, and one foot of water can sweep your vehicle away.
